Understanding How to Configure a OneDrive Data Source in CDEAdminTools

Modified on Wed, 26 Nov at 10:48 AM

1. Introduction

A OneDrive Data Source in CDEAdminTools allows you to synchronize folders and documents between Autodesk and a shared OneDrive folder.
Before creating synchronization projects, you must configure the connection so CDEAdminTools can securely access the folder you want to use.

This article explains what each required field means, why it is needed, and includes a link to the guided Scribe tutorial where users can see how to obtain the OneDrive Shared ID.

This is not a step-by-step configuration guide — it is an overview to help you understand the process.

2. What You Need to Configure a OneDrive Data Source

When adding a new OneDrive Data Source, CDEAdminTools will ask you for the following fields:

  1. Name

  2. Application (Client) ID

  3. Application Secret

  4. Tenant ID

  5. Shared ID (instead of Site ID)

Below you will find an explanation of each value.

3. Field Explanations

1. Name (Custom Identifier)

This is a user-defined name to easily identify this Data Source among others.

Examples:

  • “OneDrive – Engineering Folder”

  • “Client Deliverables – OneDrive”

  • “Shared Project Resources OD”

This value is fully customizable.

2. Application (Client) ID

This is the unique identifier of your Azure App Registration.
It tells Microsoft Graph which application (CDEAdminTools) is requesting access.

OneDrive, like SharePoint, uses Microsoft Graph permissions, so an Azure App Registration is required.

➡️ How to obtain it:
Follow the Scribe tutorial for creating the Azure Application (same as SharePoint):
https://scribehow.com/viewer/Registrar_Aplicacion_en_Azure__uDpmroQERya0IOZClstnSw

3. Application Secret

This is the secure password associated with the Azure App Registration.
It is used together with the Application ID to authenticate CDEAdminTools.

➡️ How to obtain it:
Also included in the Azure App Registration Scribe:
https://scribehow.com/viewer/Registrar_Aplicacion_en_Azure__uDpmroQERya0IOZClstnSw

4. Tenant ID

This value identifies your Microsoft 365 tenant (your organization's identity in Azure).
It ensures the authentication happens in your environment.

➡️ Where to find it:
Shown in the same Azure App Registration tutorial above:
https://scribehow.com/viewer/Registrar_Aplicacion_en_Azure__uDpmroQERya0IOZClstnSw

5. Shared ID (Shared Link)

This is the unique identifier of the specific OneDrive folder you want to use.
It is generated when you create a shared link for a folder in OneDrive.

CDEAdminTools uses this Shared ID to locate the exact folder where synchronization will take place.

➡️ How to obtain it:
Follow this Scribe tutorial:
https://scribehow.com/viewer/Como_obtener_el_shared_link_para_una_carpeta_de_Onedrive__GW_j0av3TdOwArau3W51Pw

You will simply paste this shared link (or the extracted ID) in the Shared ID field.

4. How These Fields Work Together

Once these values are provided:

  • Application ID + Secret authenticate CDEAdminTools using Microsoft Graph

  • Tenant ID ensures access occurs within your organization

  • Shared ID tells CDEAdminTools exactly which OneDrive folder is part of the synchronization

After configuration, this allows the system to:

  • Read folder structure

  • Access files and versions (if supported)

  • Perform one-way or two-way synchronization

  • Mirror Autodesk content into OneDrive or vice versa

The Data Source represents the external side of the connection.
The Sync Project later defines how this Data Source is paired with an Autodesk Project.

5. What Happens After Configuring the Data Source?

Once the OneDrive Data Source is created:

  1. You can select it inside a Sync Project.

  2. You choose a root folder inside the shared OneDrive location.

  3. CDEAdminTools will synchronize Autodesk’s selected folder structure with that OneDrive folder.

  4. Depending on your configuration, synchronization can be:

    • Autodesk ➝ OneDrive

    • OneDrive ➝ Autodesk

    • Bidirectional (mirror)
